Cameras are not uncommon for businesses and most government buildings, but recent installation of cameras at the Mauston Fire Department by the city has some firefighters questioning the placement of some of those cameras. Firefighters are concerned by the placement in their Locker Room/Changing Area and see it as an invasion of privacy. Some firefighters have spoke to us regarding the matter and say “I don’t think it’s right” said one firefighter. Privacy is one thing. We could be soaking wet from a call and want to change but have to go to another area to change. There is also a shower in there the firefighter explains.
The legality of the cameras placement in the dressing/changing locker room is also in question. There are many nuances when it comes to the law and privacy interests may outweigh a city’s desire to monitor people undressing potentially making it a crime still. However the statutes on the matter are ambiguous and would require expert legal advice on the matter. Some would like to know however who all has access to these cameras. It was not immediately clear however what all angles the cameras may be capturing.
We will update this story if/when more information becomes available.
